FOREST - CONCENTRIC CIRCUS

Updated: Sep 5, 2018

Here is the video for the opening song of Concentric Circus' debut album Ampersand and Sand. A song where I sing too high and the time signature frequently changes. Below you'll see some details about the making of the video.

I made this video as an attempt to make a full length stop-motion short. Though throughout my time as an animator and amateur film maker I'd made many stop-motion clips. I'd never placed together enough of these to make something that resembled a narrative.

The story of Forest, the song, is somewhat influenced by the Aokigahara Forest in Japan - known colloquially as the Suicide Forest - where many people go every year to kill themselves. The video definitely does not depict such real tragedy, but does still align itself with the spirit of the dark and scary forest. Where the 'Thing' lives is a peaceful place during the day (as seen at the end of the video) but a terrible, scary place by night.

The video was made with a collection of methods, it's a bit of an 'every trick in the book' situation. Utilising green screen techniques, photographic stop motion, frame by frame illustration for the ghosts and digital compositing and lighting.

Below you can see a time-lapse of me doing the stop motion on one day when I was feeling photogenic.

Thanks for reading this, don't forget you can listen to Ampersand and Sand on Spotify and Apple Music or listen/download/buy a physical copy on Bandcamp.
